Every instrument in Melokta runs in the browser; no installation, account or microphone is needed. Play with a mouse, by touch, with a computer keyboard or (in browsers that support it) a MIDI keyboard. Each instrument page has a short guide on how to play, step-by-step lessons and related games.
Click the keys with a mouse or press them with your fingers on a touch screen; you can play chords with several fingers. On a computer keyboard, in the wide layout the bottom row (Z–M) and the top row (Q–U) play two octaves and the Space bar is the sustain pedal. ← and → change the octave, ↑ and ↓ transpose.
A trumpet has a mouthpiece, curved metal tubing, three valves and the bell where the sound comes out. The sound starts when the lips buzz in the mouthpiece. The trumpet is a “lip-reed” wind instrument: with the same fingering, different notes come out as the lip tension and the speed of the air change.
The left hand goes on top and the right hand below. The left thumb covers the hole at the back (0); the left index, middle and ring fingers cover front holes 1, 2 and 3, and the four fingers of the right hand cover holes 4, 5, 6 and 7. Cover the holes completely with the soft pads of your fingers, not the tips.
The xylophone is a tuned percussion instrument with wooden bars that are struck with mallets. Each bar plays one note: long bars sound low and short bars sound high. On large xylophones, resonator tubes under the bars make the sound stronger. The similar instrument with metal bars is called a metallophone; it rings for longer.
