Learning goal

Plays the C major scale (C4–C5) up and down in order and knows where B is.

Topic

Seven notes make a family: C D E F G A B. After that comes C again!

Prior knowledge

Can find the notes from C to A.

Teacher note

Say the note names together while the scale is played. In the third scale step, keys are not marked when hints are off, so students read the note names. Turn on ‘With hints’ for students who need support.

Lesson steps

  1. B is just to the RIGHT of the group of three, right before high C.
  2. The next white key after B is C again! Press this high C.
  3. Play the whole scale going up: C D E F G A B C!
  4. Now go down. The keys aren’t marked — look at the note names!
  5. All mixed up! Find the note whose name you see.
  6. Jump up and down: C–E–G–C!
