Learning goal

Listens to a steady pulse (the basic beat) and plays evenly spaced beats on the bass drum and the snare.

Topic

Music has a heartbeat too: tick, tick, tick. We call it the pulse.

Prior knowledge

Trying one of the Rhythm Echo activities first is recommended.

Teacher note

First, tap along with the clicks on your knees as a class. The program counts four clicks, then the student plays. The timing tolerance is generous; every try is scored again and the best one is kept.

Lesson steps

  1. Listen to four clicks, then play the bass drum once on every click.
  2. Eight beats: no stopping, always at the same speed.
  3. Now keep the same pulse on the snare drum.
