Learning goal

Recognises short 3–5 note melodies by ear and plays them back on the trumpet in the same order; remembers a sound chain that keeps getting longer.

Topic

Like a parrot: listen and repeat exactly. But you’ll repeat notes, not words!

Prior knowledge

Can play the five notes from C to G.

Teacher note

In the first two echoes the notes are shown; after that there is only sound. Give students the hint ‘the first note is C’, then ask them to think about whether each note is higher or lower than the one before. After a mistake, the explanation tells the direction (higher or lower).

Lesson steps

  1. Watch and listen, then play the same thing.
  2. A new echo: three notes going down.
  3. This time just listen. The first note is C.
  4. Four notes, by ear only. The first note is G.
  5. Memory chain: watch, listen and play it in the same order. It gets longer every round!
