Learning goal

Compares two or three sounds by pitch and plays them in order from low to high and from high to low.

Topic

A bird’s tweet is high and a bear’s growl is low. A trumpet can do both!

Prior knowledge

Can play the three open notes (slow, medium and fast air).

Teacher note

Pitch (high–low) is not the same as volume (loud–quiet), which children often mix up; point this out. The cards come in a mixed order, and the student tries each sound by playing it. A note played in the wrong order is marked with an explanation.

Lesson steps

  1. Which of the two sounds did you hear: the low one or the high one? Play it.
  2. First you’ll hear high C, then the mystery sound. Is the mystery sound lower?
  3. Play the three sounds on the cards from LOW to HIGH.
  4. Now play them from HIGH to LOW.
  5. There are three choices. Find the mystery sound and play it.
