Learning goal

Plays F with valve 1 and E with valves 1 and 2 together, using medium air, and plays the G–F–E pattern with the right fingers.

Topic

The valves make the path inside the trumpet longer. A longer path makes the sound a little lower!

Prior knowledge

Can play G with medium air.

Teacher note

The valves are numbered 1, 2, 3 from left to right (index, middle and ring finger on a real trumpet). Hold the valve down first, then blow: the order matters. On a computer keyboard, J, K and L are the valves and A, S and D are the air buttons.

Lesson steps

  1. Warm-up: no valves, medium air. This is G.
  2. Hold valve 1 down and use medium air: F!
  3. Hold valves 1 and 2 together and use medium air: E.
  4. Walk down the stairs: G, F, E.
  5. Three Steps
  6. Play the note whose name you see.
