Learning goal

Finds the F and G bars by name, plays C–D–E–F–G going up and down, and picks the named note out of five.

Topic

The staircase gets longer! After E come two new bars: F and G.

Prior knowledge

Can find the C, D and E bars.

Teacher note

F is right next to E; on the xylophone (as on the piano’s white keys) there is no gap between them, because this diatonic xylophone only has the ‘white key’ notes. Have students play the five-note staircase slowly first, then at normal speed.

Lesson steps

  1. F is to the right of E. Strike it.
  2. Now G: to the right of F.
  3. Five steps up: from C to G.
  4. Five steps down: from G to C.
  5. Swing
  6. Mixed up: strike the bar whose name you see.
