Learning goal

Plays back three-note melodies they hear in the same order, and remembers a chain of sounds that keeps getting longer.

Topic

Like an echo: listen, then play the same thing!

Prior knowledge

Can find the bars from C to G.

Teacher note

In the first two echoes the bars light up; after that there is only sound. Tell students the first note and ask them to think about whether the next note is higher or lower. Bars struck during the demonstration are not scored (listen first).

Lesson steps

  1. Watch and listen, then play the same three notes.
  2. A new echo: three notes going down.
  3. This time just listen. The first note is C.
  4. By ear only. The first note is E.
  5. A high echo! The first note is G.
  6. Memory chain: watch, listen and play it in the same order. It gets longer every round!
