Learning goal

Recognises the notes from C4 to C5 on a treble-clef staff and strikes the right xylophone bar; uses name and staff clues together.

Topic

Musicians read notes from the staff. The staff is a ladder with five lines!

Prior knowledge

Knows the names of the eight bars.

Teacher note

C is on a ledger line below the staff, E on the first line, G on the second line, B on the third line, and high C in the third space. When ‘Note names’ is off, the name under the staff is hidden. In ‘No hints’ mode the bars are not marked; a hint appears after two mistakes.

Lesson steps

  1. The note on the first line. Which bar is it?
  2. Which note sits on the second line?
  3. The note in the third space: one of the shortest bars!
  4. Strike the bar of the note you see on the staff.
  5. Mixed clues: sometimes a name, sometimes the staff.
