Learning goal

Tells quarter notes (1 beat) and half notes (2 beats) apart and plays them for the right length.

Topic

A quarter note lasts one beat, a half note lasts two. ‘Ta’ and ‘Ta-a’!

Prior knowledge

Can play quarter notes on the beat.

Teacher note

Say ‘ta-a’ for a half note and ‘ta’ for a quarter note. A half note must be held for at least one and a half beats; if the key is let go too early, a ‘hold it a little longer’ message appears.

Lesson steps

  1. HALF note: press C and hold it for two beats (ta-a).
  2. Two half notes: ta-a, ta-a.
  3. Two quarter notes, one half note: ta, ta, ta-a.
  4. Mixed rhythm: play the quarter notes short and the half notes long.
  5. Last rhythm: first long, then short-short.
