Learning goal

Tells long and short sounds apart by ear and controls how long a key is held down.

Topic

Some sounds last a long time, some are very short. Your finger is a sound clock!

Prior knowledge

Can press and release a key.

Teacher note

Use a ‘stretch your arm’ move for long sounds and a ‘clap’ for short ones. In the last four steps the bar is hidden, so students decide by listening only. A long sound needs at least 1.2 seconds; a short one less than 0.45 seconds.

Lesson steps

  1. LONG sound: hold C down until the bar is full.
  2. SHORT sound: tap C and let go right away. Tick!
  3. Play a long sound on E.
  4. Play a short sound on G.
  5. Listen! Is it long or short? Play it just like you heard it.
  6. Listen and play the same.
  7. What kind of sound is this? Play it just like you heard it.
  8. Last question: listen and play the same.
