Learning goal

Plays quarter notes on time while keeping a steady beat (tempo).

Topic

A quarter note lasts one beat: one note on every tick of the clock!

Prior knowledge

Can tell long and short sounds apart.

Teacher note

First count four beats as a class by patting your knees. The app counts four clicks, then the student plays. The timing window is wide (±0.3 s). Students can start at ‘Slow’ speed; the result is worked out again on every try, and the best try is kept.

Lesson steps

  1. Listen to four clicks, then play C on every beat.
  2. C, C, E, E. Stay with the beat!
  3. Eight beats: first the staircase, then C four times.
  4. Last rhythm: eight notes without stopping.
