Learning goal

Plays the C, F and G chords as a broken-chord (arpeggio) pattern, in a steady tempo and without stopping.

Topic

Sometimes chords aren’t played all at once but one note at a time. This is called a broken chord.

Prior knowledge

Knows the C, F and G chords; quarter-note rhythm.

Teacher note

The pattern is the same for every chord: bottom – middle – top – middle. First practice without tempo, then with the tick-tock. Point out that the hand must get ready before each chord change.

Lesson steps

  1. Broken chord pattern: bottom–middle–top–middle. Play it calmly first.
  2. In time: the C chord, then the F chord.
  3. The whole pattern: C – F – G – C.
