Learning goal

Plays the C, F and G chords (I–IV–V) with only small hand moves and changes from one chord to another.

Topic

The C chord has two friends: F and G. Together, the three of them carry lots of songs.

Prior knowledge

Can play the C chord.

Teacher note

Here the F chord is played as C–F–A and the G chord as B–D–G, so the hand hardly moves. When changing chords, remind students to keep the shared note (C in the C and F chords) under the same finger. The last step is a chord change in time.

Lesson steps

  1. F chord: C, F and A. Your C finger stays where it is!
  2. G chord: B, D and G. Your thumb slides down to B.
  3. Chord journey: C – F – C – G – C.
  4. Now hold each chord for two beats and change in time.
