Learning goal

Plays the C major triad (C–E–G) with the correct fingers in the right and left hands, together and as a broken chord (arpeggio).

Topic

When three notes come together, they make a chord. Your first chord: the C chord!

Prior knowledge

Knows the notes C–G and the finger numbers.

Teacher note

Show the ‘skip one, press one’ rule: C, (skip D) E, (skip F) G. The right hand uses fingers 1-3-5, the left hand 5-3-1. In the last step the chord is hidden: students find the chord they hear among the marked keys.

Lesson steps

  1. C chord: press C, E and G together with fingers 1, 3 and 5.
  2. Broken chord: play the same notes one at a time.
  3. C chord with your left hand: fingers 5, 3 and 1.
  4. Chord tennis match: left hand – right hand – left hand – right hand!
  5. Mystery chord! Listen and press the right three marked keys together.
