Learning goal

Reads notes from C4 to C5 on the treble clef staff and plays them on the keyboard.

Topic

Notes live on five lines. The higher the note sits, the higher the sound; the lower it sits, the lower the sound.

Prior knowledge

Can play the scale from C to B.

Teacher note

Introduce the staff as a ‘note apartment building’: the lines and spaces are the floors. Middle C has its own little extra line (a ledger line). The first three steps are line notes; after that it’s mixed up.

Lesson steps

  1. Look at the staff: the note on the little line below it is C. Play it!
  2. This note sits on the bottom line, line 1. It’s E.
  3. This note sits on line 2. It’s G.
  4. This note is just below line 1, in the space. Which note is it?
  5. Play the note shown on the staff.
