Learning goal

Accompanies a piece of music with a short repeating rhythm pattern (ostinato) without losing the tempo.

Topic

In an orchestra everyone plays their own part. Your part: a short rhythm, again and again!

Prior knowledge

Can keep a steady pulse with and without the metronome.

Teacher note

An ostinato is a short pattern that repeats over and over. The melody can be distracting, so ask students to focus on their own pattern. The piano accompaniment is an original composition.

Lesson steps

  1. Accompany the piano melody with ‘bass drum – rest – snare – rest’.
  2. New pattern: bass drum, bass drum, snare, rest. Together with the melody!
