Learning goal

Improvises an original rhythmic answer to a four-beat rhythm question while keeping the tempo.

Topic

Music can be a conversation too: someone asks and someone answers. You make up the answer!

Prior knowledge

Eighth notes and using two sounds together.

Teacher note

The answer doesn’t have to match the question. What is checked: at least three beats, beats that land on the clicks or halfway between them (eighth notes), both sounds used, and an answer that fits within four beats. Let students hear their answer with ‘Play my answer’.

Lesson steps

  1. Question: bass drum, snare, bass drum, snare. Play your own answer!
  2. A new question. This time you can use eighth notes (ti-ti) in your answer.
  3. A tricky question! Your answer should have at least four beats.
