Learning goal
Uses the left-hand five-finger position (C3–G3) and left-hand finger numbers; finds the octave between low C and middle C.
Topic
So far you’ve played with your right hand. Today your left hand takes the stage: low, deep sounds!
Prior knowledge
Can play the C–G position with the right hand.
Teacher note
Left-hand finger numbers are a mirror image: the pinky is 5 and the thumb is 1. First make a ‘silent piano’ on the desk with both hands. Blue keys are for the left hand. Say the ‘octave jump’ from C3 to C4 together as a class.
Lesson steps
- Your left pinky (5) goes on low C, C3. Press it!
- Left-hand position: climb up from your pinky to your thumb.
- Now walk down from your thumb to your pinky.
- Find middle C, one octave above low C.
- Octave jump: low C – middle C – low C – middle C.
- With your left hand, press the low note whose name you see.
- Bear Walk
