Learning goal

Reads C3–G3 and middle C (on a ledger line) on the bass clef staff and plays them on the keyboard.

Topic

Right-hand notes live on the treble clef; left-hand notes live on the bass clef.

Prior knowledge

Has tried reading notes on the treble clef; left-hand position.

Teacher note

The two dots of the bass clef sit around the F3 line; it’s a ‘starting point’. C3 is in the second space, E3 in the third space and G3 in the fourth space. Show that middle C on the treble clef and middle C on the bass clef are the same key.

Lesson steps

  1. F sits on the line between the two dots of the bass clef. Play it!
  2. The note in the second space from the bottom is low C. Play it!
  3. The top space: G.
  4. The middle space: which note is it?
  5. Above the bass clef staff, on a ledger line: middle C!
  6. Play the bass clef note with your left hand.
